Alexis Lara Herrera, 26, of Boston, was arrested and charged in federal court with smuggling firearms from the United States to the Dominican Republic. He pleaded not guilty during his initial appearance last Friday and is currently in federal custody awaiting trial.
Authorities in the Dominican Republic discovered four Glock firearms and 500 rounds of ammunition concealed within an air conditioner in a shipping container from Boston on March 18, 2023. The investigation revealed Herrera allegedly purchased these firearms from licensed dealers and communicated with co-conspirators throughout the shipment process.

Evidence recovered from Herrera’s phone allegedly showed his involvement in firearm smuggling, including texts and photos of multiple guns. Further analysis suggests he was involved in numerous firearm shipments to the Dominican Republic, even after the March 2023 seizure.
If convicted, Herrera could face up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a significant fine.
