Evan Sims, a 41-year-old man from Rhode Island, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for making a false bomb threat during a flight from Orlando to Providence on December 5, 2023.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Sims made alarming comments to his travel companion and flight crew before takeoff, expressing concerns about the plane’s safety and the emergency exits.
While airborne, Sims falsely claimed his companion had a bomb, prompting the flight to be diverted to Jacksonville International Airport.

A search of the plane by bomb detection dogs found no explosives. Sims pled guilty to the charges in March 2024 and has been in custody since his arrest.
In addition to the prison sentence, Sims will serve three years of supervised release and must pay $25,478 in restitution to Breeze Airways.
