Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz and Democrat Jared Moskowitz introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives honoring former fire department chief Corey Comperatore, who was killed while shielding his family during the attempted assassination of President Donald J. Trump.

The resolution also condemns any form of political violence.

“Corey Comperatore should not have lost his life exercising his First Amendment right by going to a political rally. There is no place for political violence in America! Corey’s selfless and courageous actions exemplify the highest standards of bravery and devotion to both his family and his country. This resolution seeks to commemorate his extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment to public service after he heroically sacrificed his life while shielding his family from gunfire intended for the President Trump,” said Congressman Gaetz.

“Corey Comperatore led his life keeping his community safe and spent the last moments of his life shielding his family from danger. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, those are the brave qualities we should all salute. He deserved the ability to go to a political rally and return home. I hope that my colleagues will join us in honoring his sacrifice,” said Congressman Moskowitz.

“He was a hero who shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable,” Dawn Comperatore Schafer, Corey Comperatore’s sister, said on Facebook. “My baby brother just turned 50 and had so much life left to experience. Hatred has no limits, and love has no bounds. Pray for my sister-in-law, nieces, my mother, sister, me, and his nieces and nephews, as this feels like a terrible nightmare, but we know it is our painful reality.”

The other two victims injured in the attempted assassination of former President Trump are 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver, who are both in stable condition, the Pennsylvania state police said in a statement Sunday.

The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks shot at Trump from “an elevated position” on top of a building approximately 400 feet away.+
