The shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, at former President Trump’s rally is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials say.

Two officials spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Officials say the shooter was not an attendee at the rally and was killed by U.S. Secret Service agents, the official said.

Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, but authorities have confirmed that a single shooter opened fire at the rally, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to former President Trump.

Secret Service agents surrounded Trump, and he was immediately taken to a local medical facility for treatment.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s spokesperson.

The identities of the victims and the shooter have not yet been released.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies are on the scene conducting a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the shooting and gather further information about the events that transpired.

House Speaker Mike Johnson wrote on social media: “This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned.”
