A revised federal lawsuit claims that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ suspension of Orlando-area State Attorney Monique Worrell violated voters’ constitutional rights.
The lawsuit, filed by two voters and a community group, argues that DeSantis’ action disenfranchised voters and infringed on their First Amendment rights.
The lawsuit challenges DeSantis’ August 2023 executive order, which suspended Worrell, a Democrat elected in 2020. The order alleged that Worrell’s policies discouraged prosecutors from seeking mandatory minimum sentences for certain crimes.

However, the lawsuit contends that Worrell was fulfilling her campaign promises to reform the criminal justice system and exercising her prosecutorial discretion.
The plaintiffs argue that DeSantis abused his authority and violated due process and First Amendment rights by suspending Worrell. They are seeking to have the suspension declared unconstitutional, and Worrell reinstated.
This lawsuit comes after the Florida Supreme Court upheld the suspension in a separate case.
