James Brenner, 61, was sentenced last week in Box Elder County Court for the murder of 19-year-old Dylan Rounds. Rounds went missing from his farm in Lucin, Utah, in May 2022, and his remains were only located in April 2024.

According to KSL-TV, Brenner was sentenced to 15 years in prison for two counts of murder, which will be served consecutively.

Brenner, who had been squatting on land adjacent to Rounds’ farm, pleaded guilty to second-degree felony murder in a plea deal with prosecutors. According to investigators, the motive for the crime stemmed from an argument between the two.

As part of the agreement, Brenner revealed the location of Rounds’ remains in a remote area near the Utah-Nevada border. A search of Brenner’s trailer near the crime scene had previously uncovered Rounds’ abandoned phone.

The discovery of the remains finally brought closure to Dylan’s family after nearly two years of searching.

Brenner’s sentencing details, including the length of his prison term, have not been made public.
