A Missouri man has admitted his role in a fentanyl distribution operation that involved receiving drugs through the mail and sending out the proceeds.

Timothy Carter, 35, pleaded guilty on Monday to a felony conspiracy charge related to distributing and possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute. According to court documents, Carter conspired with A.D. Harris, 31, of St. Louis County, who pleaded guilty to the same charge in December 2023.

The investigation began in August 2021 when authorities spotted a suspicious package addressed to an address on Allemania Street in St. Louis.

The package, shipped in a retail box for a microwave, was retrieved by Harris and taken to Carter’s residence. Later that September, investigators observed a similar microwave box being mailed from St. Louis to Texas.

A court-authorized search of the microwave box revealed $28,500 hidden within the appliance. This money, according to Carter’s plea agreement, represented proceeds from fentanyl sales.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. It is a major contributor to the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States.

The DEA St. Louis Field Division investigated the case. A sentencing date for Carter has not yet been set.
