The legal battle surrounding former President Donald Trump’s classified documents case has taken a new turn. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted Trump’s request for further briefing on the issue of presidential immunity.

This development follows the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity, which has significant implications for the ongoing proceedings.

In her latest order, Judge Cannon has afforded special counsel Jack Smith the opportunity, but not the obligation, to file a submission on the use of classified information at trial.

Simultaneously, she has paused two upcoming deadlines for Trump and his co-defendants, providing them more time to prepare their defense.

Trump’s legal team has been proactive in addressing the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

They had previously filed a motion to dismiss the indictment on immunity grounds, and the latest order from Judge Cannon indicates that they have now requested a pause in the court proceedings to further examine how the Supreme Court’s decision affects the case.

The revised briefing schedule outlined in Cannon’s order provides a timeline for the parties involved to address the immunity issue. Special counsel Jack Smith now has until July 18 to file a submission on the use of classified information at trial, and Trump’s team has until July 21 to respond.

The latest development in the classified documents case is part of a broader legal landscape that Trump is navigating. Alongside this case, the former president is also facing other criminal proceedings, including the hush money trial presided over by Judge Juan Merchan.

Through an order earlier this week, Judge Merchan has stayed Trump’s July 11 sentencing hearing to allow for briefing on Trump’s motion to set aside the verdict in that trial. This move further highlights the intricate web of legal challenges that Trump is confronting, as he seeks to minimize the impact of the charges against him.
