Three law enforcement officers were wounded in a shootout that erupted during an emergency response in Lost Nation, Ogle County, Illinois, on June 12th.

The incident occurred when members of the Ogle County Emergency Response Team (ERT) responded to a call from a concerned parent reporting their adult son’s suicidal and homicidal ideations. The suspect was known to be armed with multiple firearms and had a revoked Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card due to a clear and present danger report.

Upon entering the residence, the ERT was immediately met with gunfire from the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Jonathon Gounaris. The officers returned fire, incapacitating Gounaris with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Three ERT members, Tyler Carls (Rochelle Fire Department), Lt. Jason Ketter (Ogle County Sheriff’s Office), and Sgt. Tad Dominski (Oregon Police Department), were struck by gunfire during the exchange. All three officers were transported to a hospital for treatment and have since been released.

Following the shootout, Gounaris was found inside the home, armed with two handguns, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor. He has been charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm without a FOID card. He is currently in custody without bond.

The Ogle County community has rallied around the injured officers, expressing their gratitude for their service and wishing them a swift recovery.
