The Wisconsin Attorney General has taken action against three key former President Donald Trump allies, charging them with felony forgery related to their role in the 2020 election.

The charges, filed against attorneys Kenneth Chesebro and Jim Troupis, along with former Trump aide Mike Roman, shine a spotlight on the so-called “fake elector” scheme that has been the subject of intense scrutiny across multiple swing states.

Wisconsin is the fifth state to bring charges against Trump’s associates for alleged similar plans.

The Charges and the Accused

The Wisconsin Attorney General, Democrat Josh Kaul, announced the felony forgery charges against Chesebro, Troupis, and Roman on Tuesday. Each individual faces a single count, punishable by up to six years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.

Chesebro, a 62-year-old attorney, was an advisor to the Trump campaign and is accused of playing a central role in the fake elector scheme. He has already pleaded guilty to one felony charge of conspiracy to commit filing false documents in a separate case in Georgia.

Troupis, also 62 years old, served as Trump’s attorney in Wisconsin and is alleged to have been involved in the submission of paperwork falsely claiming that the former president had won the state.

Mike Roman, 51, was Trump’s director of Election Day operations and is accused of delivering the fake elector documents from Wisconsin to a Pennsylvania congressman’s staffer in an effort to get them to then-Vice President Mike Pence on January 6, 2021.

According to the complaint, the strategy in Wisconsin mirrored moves in six other swing states, with Chesebro arguing in a November 2020 memo that electors representing Trump should meet on December 14, 2020, to preserve the Trump-Pence electoral slate in case a court or legislature determined them to be the winners.

Chesebro subsequently provided instructions to Troupis for the December 14th elector meetings, and the fake elector slate was then delivered to Chesebro in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021, by a law student working for the Republican Party of Wisconsin, according to the complaint.

The charges in Wisconsin are the first to be brought in the state and follow separate charges in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Georgia related to the fake elector scheme. This coordinated legal action across multiple states underscores the gravity of the situation and the determination of authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
