As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) approaches in August, organizers are bracing for protests and unrest in Chicago.
According to a Politico report, DNC officials are growing increasingly apprehensive about the situation, particularly in light of concerns over the city’s rookie mayor, Brandon Johnson, who is perceived as sympathetic to protesters.
This heightened sense of concern has prompted the DNC to consider rearranging events and pre-taping more presentations in an effort to mitigate the impact of any disruptive demonstrations.

The convention’s host, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, has emphasized the importance of peaceful protest and cooperation with law enforcement, urging participants to refrain from carrying weapons or engaging in disruptive behavior.
“I’m preparing for the best. Chicago is, we’re going to showcase this wonderful city. People are going to have a great time. We’ve been preparing for the convention. The fundraising is going well. The suites are sold out just about for the convention. And we’re going to go and we’re going to have a great convention where we’re going to talk about all these issues, including access to reproductive technology,” Duckworth said.
Politico reported that the DNC may reschedule events and pre-tape more of the talks to prevent protesters inside the United Center.

“We need to be decent about how we protest. We need to listen to law enforcement. We need to be peaceful, and so my focus with the convention is to make sure that people are not carrying weapons and people are not disruptive. That we do what is the truly the most American thing you can do, more so than even putting on the uniform and defending this country, is stand up and speak your mind and we’re going to do that in the most American way, which is we’re going to do it peacefully and the right way,” Duckworth said.
To ensure the safety and smooth operation of the Democratic National Convention, the DNC has been working closely with the U.S. Secret Service and the Chicago Police Department for over a year to develop a comprehensive security plan.
While the details of this plan have not yet been made public, the Secret Service has confirmed that they have been collaborating with the city to ensure a well-coordinated and effective security strategy.

One of the primary concerns expressed by the DNC is the perceived alignment of the city’s new mayor, Brandon Johnson, with the interests of protesters.
The Politico report suggests that the DNC is worried about Johnson’s approach and how it might impact the convention’s security and operations.
