Sometimes, reality can cut through the fog, even in the unlikeliest of places.

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump’s camp was highlighting a New York Times-Sienna poll that showed more Americans believe the country was better off when he was in charge than under the current occupant of the White House.

The Times asked respondents whether the years under Trump or President Joe Biden were mostly good for America, mostly bad for America, or somewhere in between.

Overall, 42% said Trump’s term was good for the nation, compared to just 25% who said the same for Biden.

On the flip side, 46% said the Biden years have been bad for America, compared to just 33% who said that of Trump.

As the Times noted, “While the memories of Mr. Trump’s tumultuous and chaotic administration have not significantly faded, many voters now have a rosier picture of his handling of the economy, immigration and maintaining law and order.”

The mainstream media was citing the poll as a positive for Biden. It showed that he trails Trump among all voters by 46-45 — which may be somewhat surprising, considering the Democrats and the media never waste an opportunity to label Trump as the new Hitler and talk about the anticipated end of American democracy if he gets another term.

Yet the reality hidden within the poll were numerous bad markers for the Democratic incumbent.

What may be more stunning for Biden is that only 53% of Democrats now and 51% of Democrats who voted for him in 2020 say his tenure has been good for the country.

Biden is also woefully underperforming among independents.

Just 21% indicated that Biden’s time in office has been good for America.

Meanwhile, twice as many independents (43%) said the same about Trump being in the White House.

Finally, among all voters, Biden continues to get terrible reviews:

  • Just 25% say the nation is on the right track
  • Only 16% “strongly” approve of his job performance, while another 22% “somewhat” approve
  • Only 40% have a favorable opinion of Biden, including just 15% who say they hold a “very” favorable opinion of him.

By the way, the NYT poll was weighted toward Democrats.

Overall, 32% of respondents identified as Democrats, compared to 26% who said they were Republicans. The rest declared themselves independents.
