New York City officials have implemented a controversial program that provides prepaid debit cards for food and baby supplies.

According to officials, the initiative aims to reduce costs associated with the city’s growing migrant population and offer culturally relevant support with up to $350 per week loaded on the cards.

New York City plans to distribute the prepaid debit cards in a phased approach, with the first batch distributed on Monday.

Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds blasted the program, saying, “It’s time to put the American people FIRST.”

“NYC has launched a $53M program to pay hundreds of dollars per week to illegal aliens through prepaid debit cards. There are THOUSANDS of homeless AMERICAN CITIZENS in NYC, yet government prioritizes illegal aliens. It’s time to put the American people FIRST,” said Doanlds on X.

Supporters of the program emphasize the need for innovative solutions to manage the ongoing national humanitarian crisis.

“New York City has led the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis,” a spokesperson for NYC City Hall told The National Desk (TND). “A large part of our success is due to our constant work to find new ways to better serve the hundreds of individuals and families arriving every single day.”

The pilot program will cover about 460 of the 64,500 migrants in the city’s care as City Hall assesses its efficacy.
