CLEARWATER, Fla. – The city of Clearwater and Clearwater Public Utilities invite residents to a science-themed open house and tours at one of our wastewater treatment plants.
“The city’s mad scientists – we mean staff! – from the Marshall Street Water Reclamation Facility will welcome members of the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, and take them on a tour of our plant, 1605 Harbor Drive in Clearwater,” said the City of Clearwater.
This event celebrates National Public Science Day and the science, technology, engineering and math skills of our wastewater teams. Visitors can tour the plant, talk to operators about how our wastewater treatment process works, see our giant pools and pumps that are larger than most people, and stay for some science and silliness after the tour.

Tours take about 60-90 minutes and happen every half hour: 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., noon, and 12:30 p.m. Strollers are not allowed on the walkable tour route but can be left near the laboratory. The tour may not be appropriate for very small children. Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, accommodations will be made as possible. The facility is not fully ADA-accessible.
“Most people have no idea what happens to their wastewater after it goes down their drains or toilets,” said Richard Gardner, Clearwater Public Utilities Director. “It’s not magic, but it is a precise science, and we’re looking forward to sharing that with our customers on Saturday. Our crews are highly skilled in using physical and biological processes to do in hours what in nature would take weeks.”

For safety, attendees should wear flat, closed-toed shoes, sneakers or boots that will not slide off your feet. We recommend wearing hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and loose-fitting athletic type clothing, as the tour is outdoors.
Visitors should use the destination address of 1240 Russell St., when using a GPS map to find the plant. Attendees should park in the parking lot on Russell Street to the west of Philip Jones Field. There will be posted signs, and the entrance is directly to the west of the parking lot.
