The Florida House is set to debate a contentious proposal next week that would loosen restrictions on the number of hours that 16- and 17-year-olds can work.

Rep. Linda Chaney, R-St. Pete Beach, sponsored the bill (HB 49), which was added Wednesday to a list of measures that the House is expected to consider during a floor session on February 1.

The bill, for example, would lift restrictions on 16- and 17-year-olds working more than eight hours per day when school is scheduled the following day.

It would also remove restrictions on working more than 30 hours per week while school is in session.
