Florida is scheduled to release its December unemployment report on Friday, and the state saw the highest number of first-time claims for unemployment benefits since early October last week.
The U.S. Department of Labor estimated the initial number of jobless applications filed in Florida last Thursday to be 6,781, an increase from 6,078 in the week ending January 6.
The number of new claims filed last week was the highest since 6,790 were filed in the week that concluded on October 7.

Over the last four weeks, the state has averaged 5,607 claims; however, this average has been distorted by declines during weeks with fewer holidays.
The weekly average since the beginning of October is 5,803. In November, the unemployment rate in Florida was 2.9%, meaning that out of the 11.19 million people in the labor force, 324,000 were estimated to be unemployed.
In December, the country’s unemployment rate was 3.7%.
