Body-worn camera footage from a shooting involving a Baltimore police officer in the Southwest District was made public by the Baltimore Police Department.

The video shows what happened on December 30, 2023, around 9:15 a.m., when patrol officers from Southwest District noticed a naked man standing on the corner in the 2000 block of West Pratt Street while they were responding to a burglary call.

Officers parked their car to look into the matter after they saw the man in the video entering a convenience store.

A store employee notified officers that the man—37-year-old Russom Gebretsadik—had gone upstairs to the back of the building.

Gebretsadik started throwing objects at the officers when they went to the back of the building and tried to speak with him.

After requesting assistance, the officers managed to obtain a ballistic shield.

Then, to find Gebretsadik, officers cleared several rooms and ascended numerous flights of stairs.

After reaching the third floor, Gebretsadik moved toward the officers after stepping out from behind a door brandishing a machete and a combat knife.
