TAMPA, Fla. – Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin on Thursday responded to the firestorm caused by his wife Mariah who on social media ripped into head coach Todd Bowles, calling him a liar.

“I don’t think Coach Bowles had any malice in what he was saying,” Godwin said.

Godwin was referring to Bowles’ answer to his lack of targets in the Panthers game.

On Monday, Bowles said he didn’t know Godwin didn’t have any catches in the game until he was made aware of it.

“I just saw that,” Bowles said. We were subbing him out a lot. Obviously, he’s a little nicked up, so he’s not totally 100%.”

That didn’t sit well with Godwin’s wife Mariah who took to Instagram to blast Bowles.

“I’m not sure why we (Bowles) are just blatantly lying here,” Mariah Godwin posted. Regardless of how banged up Chris is, he continues to work his ass off. I don’t know why things are the way they are, this isn’t my team to coach.”

Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales admitted that he and Godwin had a sit-down meeting one-on-one on Thursday to let out their frustrations.

I asked Godwin if he is good with Canales now.

“I think we had a really, really good talk, very productive,” Goodwin said. ” I think at the end of the day, we both see eye to eye. I think at the end of the day, it’s going to be a lot better for the team.”

It turns out Godwin played right around his average number of snaps (52) in the game and wasn’t being subbed out any more than normal. Godwin did have his streak of 67 games with at least one catch broken. Godwin did score on a 19-yard touchdown run, and both he and Bowles were pleased that he was able to contribute to the win in that way.

“For him to get that run for us was huge for him.” Bowles said. “I think it helped him alot, it helped us a lot, so it was good to see him in the end zone.”

It’s things that you live and learn from,” Godwin said. “At the end of the day, I was still there. I was able to contribute in some capacity.”

What about his wife going public on social media to express herself? Is he for or against any family member publicly stating their feelings about a coach?

“They’re there to support you through everything, but they have absolutely zero control over what happens. Obviously Mariah is the closest one to me, that’s my person and she sees it all.”

Godwin stressed he’s good with Bowles. He’s good with Canales and he’s looking forward to having a good game and a win Sunday in Atlanta.
