New accounts of Hamas’ mass sexual violence have surfaced as Israel denounces organizations that refuse to condemn it, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has raised concerns about the lack of response from international women’s rights organizations, human rights groups, and the United Nations regarding the atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli women.

During a press conference, Netanyahu expressed his disappointment and called for action, stating, “I expect all civilized leaders, governments, nations, to speak up against this atrocity.”

“I say to the women’s rights organizations, to the human rights organizations, you’ve heard of the rape of Israeli women, horrible atrocities, sexual mutilation — where the hell are you?” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a news conference Tuesday, posted on X.

The Voices That Must Be Heard

Netanyahu’s remarks highlighted the silence of women’s rights organizations and human rights groups in the face of the brutal acts committed by Hamas against Israeli women.

He emphasized the need for these organizations to use their platforms to condemn such atrocities and demand justice.

The Prime Minister’s call to action raises critical questions about the role and responsibility of women’s rights organizations in addressing violence against women globally.

The Alarming Stories of Abuse

During his meeting with released hostages and their families, Netanyahu listened to heartbreaking stories of abuse, including sexual assault, cruel rape, physical and mental abuse, and the suffering endured by loved ones.

During the immediate aftermath of the attacks, the identification of bodies took precedence over the preservation of evidence.

To bring the perpetrators to justice, police say they are examining 60,000 videos seized from the body cameras of Hamas attackers, social media, and security cameras, in addition to 1,000 testimonies.

Finding survivors of rape has proven to be challenging, as many of the victims were murdered by their attackers.

When Hamas attacked the music festival on October 7, concertgoer Ron Freger fled and reported hearing a woman scream for assistance. He told the Associated Press, “I was lying in a pit when I heard a girl yelling, ‘They’re raping me, they’re raping me!'”

He told the AP that several minutes later, he heard gunfire nearby, and the woman being raped fell silent.

“The feeling in that moment is one of complete powerlessness. I’m lying in this hole and I have no ability to do anything. I have no weapon, I have nothing, I’m surrounded by other people who are hiding with me and we’re completely powerless,” said Freger.

The Absence of Outrage

Netanyahu expressed disappointment over the lack of outrage from women’s rights organizations and human rights groups.

He questioned whether the silence was due to the victims being Jewish women, highlighting the need for equal treatment and protection of all women, regardless of their background.

This absence of outrage underscores the importance of solidarity and united action in addressing violence against women worldwide.

The Role of Women’s Rights Organizations

Women’s rights organizations play a vital role in advocating for gender equality, empowering women, and combating violence against women. Their work extends beyond national borders, addressing global issues and ensuring that women’s voices are heard and respected. These organizations advocate for policy changes, support survivors, and raise awareness about violence against women and the need for accountability.

Raising Awareness and Advocacy

One of the primary functions of women’s rights organizations is to raise awareness about issues affecting women and advocate for change.

They use various platforms, such as social media campaigns, public events, and partnerships with other organizations, to amplify their message and mobilize support.

By shedding light on atrocities like those committed by Hamas, women’s rights organizations can drive public discourse and demand action from governments and international bodies.

Supporting Survivors and Providing Resources

Women’s rights organizations also play a crucial role in supporting survivors of violence.

They provide safe spaces, counseling services, legal aid, and other resources to help survivors heal and rebuild their lives.

Additionally, these organizations work towards creating a society that supports survivors and encourages them to come forward without fear of stigma or retaliation.

Advocating for Policy Changes

Another significant aspect of the work done by women’s rights organizations is advocating for policy changes at local, national, and international levels.

They engage with lawmakers, participate in policy discussions, and push for legislation that protects women’s rights and ensures accountability for perpetrators of violence.

Through their advocacy efforts, these organizations contribute to the creation of a legal framework that prioritizes the safety and well-being of women.

The Importance of International Collaboration

Netanyahu’s call for action extends beyond individual countries or regions. He emphasizes the need for a united front against atrocities committed against women, regardless of their nationality or background. International collaboration between women’s rights organizations is crucial to address global issues and hold perpetrators accountable.

Sharing Best Practices and Strategies

By collaborating with organizations from different countries and regions, women’s rights organizations can exchange knowledge, share best practices, and develop effective strategies to combat violence against women. This collaboration helps in identifying successful initiatives that can be replicated in different contexts, ensuring a collective approach to addressing this pressing issue.

Amplifying Voices on the Global Stage

International collaboration allows women’s rights organizations to amplify their voices and leverage the power of collective action on the global stage.

By working together, these organizations can highlight particular instances of violence, promote policy changes, and make sure that governments and international organizations pay attention to and respect the voices of survivors.
