HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County Fire Rescue battled a residential structure fire Sunday afternoon in Plant City.
“Our 911 Dispatchers received calls at 1:36 P.M. from several callers stating a log home at the 3400 Block of Keene Road in Plant City was fully engulfed in flames,” said HCFR.
Responding units could see a large column of smoke coming from the area and called a working fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene to a two-story log house fully engulfed in flames.
The incident commander struck a second alarm as the fire included several large bales of hay and cars adjacent to the residence.
Crews attacked the fire from the outside, ultimately setting up firefighting operations from a ladder truck while engines and brush trucks worked together to suppress the fire in the hay bales and field.
Water supply was a challenge that was overcome using a combination of efforts. Crews summoned water tankers, fire trucks that carry 3500 gallons of water, to supply water to the units battling the blaze. The first arriving engine, Engine 23, employed drafting operations from a pond near the home.
Fire engines can “draft” or pull water from a static water source, in this case, a pond, to the pump on their engine to fight fire. This tactic gave Engine 23 the ability to fight the fire with adequate amounts of uninterrupted water. There were no injuries to first responders or civilians.
It is believed a dog was inside the house and has succumbed to the conditions.
Crews are still working to ensure the fire is completely extinguished. Our Fire Investigations Unit is also on the scene, working to determine the fire’s cause.
