In a highly partisan and bitterly divided country, conventional wisdom suggests that the key to power belongs to those who can best woo voters who seek to be above the fray: independents and moderates.
Right now, that would be former President Donald Trump.
A new poll reveals Trump has a solid lead over President Joe Biden among independents.
The survey, by Cygnal, found that Trump holds a six-point advantage over Biden among independents, although 18% are undecided.

Cygnal reported that Biden leads Trump 47-45 among all voters.
Yet among independents, Trump also leads Biden by six points on the favorability question — despite being 10 points underwater with that group on that issue.
Trump’s lead also holds up even if proclaimed independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gains some traction.
Among independents, Cygnal found that by factoring in RFK, 17% would back Kennedy. Yet Trump would still lead Biden 36-30.

In a different aspect of the poll, the group Cygnal identified as “moderates,” which comprised 11% of its respondents, believing that Republicans were the more “extreme” of the two parties but are still solidly behind the GOP on a generic ballot.
In a Trump-Biden rematch, the pollster reported that moderates lean in favor of Trump by eight points. Yet RFK pulls more of these voters from Biden than he does Trump. Trump’s lead among moderates grows to 11 points when RFK is in the mix.
