South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott said on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the 2024 GOP contest, roughly two months before the Iowa leadoff caucuses began.

The senator made the unexpected announcement on “Sunday Night in America” with Trey Gowdy.

The announcement was made shortly after the third Republican primary debate, in which Scott once again fell short of breaking through and was still struggling in the polls.

The Associated Press received confirmation of the story from his campaign spokesperson, Nathan Brand. Following the interview, Gowdy stated that he was taken aback by the announcement.

He entered the GOP race with more cash than any other Republican candidate but couldn’t find a lane in a field dominated by former President Donald Trump.
