Shirtless photos featuring New York Judge Arthur Engoron have sparked fresh criticism among supporters of former President Donald Trump.

These photos, belonging to Engoron, were featured in his high school alumni newsletter, leaving many questioning their appropriateness and relevance.

The Shirtless Photos in the Alumni Newsletter

Archived newsletters from the Wheatley School Alumni Association reveal the presence of shirtless photos believed to be of Arthur Engoron’s torso, dated 2020 and 2021.

As the curator of these newsletters, the 74-year-old judge included a photo captioned “before and after,” as well as a selfie from October 2020 labeled as a “bonus torso photo.”

Trump Supporters’ Reactions and Criticism

Supporters of former President Donald Trump were quick to seize upon the shirtless photos of Judge Engoron.

Sharing screenshots of the newsletter and full-body pictures of Engoron at a gym, a Trump-affiliated group called Marco Polo took to social media to express their outrage.

They accused Engoron of “harassing DJT in NYC” and claimed that the judge takes naked selfies in the mirror at the gym before sharing them in the high school alumni newsletter. This post quickly gained traction and fueled further criticism from Trump’s supporters.

Conservative commentator and Trump supporter Collin Rugg also joined the chorus of criticism, suggesting that Engoron’s involvement in posting half-naked photos of himself on an alumni newsletter he controls raises concerns about his fitness for his role as the judge presiding over Trump’s NYC trial.

Rugg went on to state that Engoron’s actions are indicative of a deeper issue, suggesting that the judge may not be well mentally.

Engoron’s Response and Controversies

Judge Arthur Engoron has faced backlash not only from Trump supporters but also from the former president himself.

Their contentious relationship was on full display during Trump’s civil fraud trial, where the two sparred both in and outside the courtroom.

Prior to his testimony, Trump took to Truth Social, a social media platform he co-founded, to criticize Engoron, calling him biased and asserting that he is a judge controlled by a club.

This public spat set the stage for a tense courtroom exchange between the judge and the former president.

During Trump’s testimony, Engoron repeatedly attempted to rein in the former president, urging him to answer questions directly and even calling on Trump’s lawyers to control him.

The tension between the two escalated when Engoron made an earlier ruling finding Trump liable for fraud, prompting the former president to respond defiantly, claiming that the fraud was on the court rather than on himself.

Legal Implications and Ethical Considerations

While the inclusion of shirtless photos in a high school alumni newsletter may not have direct legal implications, it raises questions about the ethics of a judge’s conduct.

Judges are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and impartiality, both inside and outside the courtroom.

Engoron’s decision to share these photos, whether they are progress photos or not, has led to concerns about his judgment and the potential impact on his ability to preside over cases fairly.

Examining the Freedom of Expression Angle

Some may argue that Judge Engoron’s inclusion of shirtless photos in the alumni newsletter falls within the realm of freedom of expression.

As a private individual, Engoron may argue that he has the right to share personal photos in a newsletter that he curates.

However, this argument is not without its counterpoints.

Critics contend that judges, as public figures, should adhere to a higher standard of conduct, particularly in their public communications. The debate around freedom of expression versus maintaining professional decorum remains a complex and ongoing discussion.

The Role of Social Media in the Controversy

The controversy surrounding Judge Engoron’s shirtless photos highlights the power and influence of social media in shaping public perception and discourse.

The rapid spread of these photos, coupled with inflammatory commentary from Trump supporters, demonstrates how social media platforms can amplify controversies and contribute to the erosion of public trust in institutions.

This case serves as a reminder of the need for responsible use of social media by individuals in positions of authority.
