Rep. Cori Bush, a prominent figure in Missouri politics, has made waves with her progressive vision and tireless advocacy for social justice.
As a black woman who emerged as a political force in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, Bush has become a symbol of the national Black Lives Matter movement.
But on Monday, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell announced that he would drop his bid to unseat Republican U.S. Senator Josh Hawley in 2024 and instead run against Cori Bush in the 2024 Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District seat.
Bell, who had initially positioned himself as the Democrat best equipped to defeat Hawley, cited concerns over Bush’s stance on Israel as a motivation for his decision.

“Over the last several weeks, as I’ve campaigned around the state, I’ve heard one refrain from Democrats above all else; yes, we need you in Washington, but St. Louis needs you in the House of Representatives,” Bell wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. In a press conference after announcing his decision, Bell referred to Bush’s position on Israel as a major difference between the two.
“I think that we need to make certain that we are providing that effective leadership, not only in our district but in D.C. and on the world stage,” Bell said, at his press conference Monday. “Understand this unique place that we are with the world literally on fire … we cannot give aid and comfort to a terrorist organization, and Hamas is a terrorist organization,” he added.
The primary race between Cori Bush and Wesley Bell promises to be a heated contest. Both candidates have emerged as influential figures within the Democratic Party, with strong grassroots support.
While Bush has established herself as a progressive champion, Bell brings his experience as St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney to the table.

The winner of the August primary will be the heavy favorite in the November election, given the overwhelmingly Democratic nature of the district.
Both Cori Bush and Wesley Bell rose to prominence in the wake of the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014.
The shooting sparked widespread protests and ignited the national Black Lives Matter movement. Bush, a vocal leader in the protests, used her platform to advocate for justice and demand accountability for the lives lost to police violence.
Bell, a municipal judge and attorney at the time, emerged as a voice of reason, urging calm in the face of escalating tensions.
Despite their shared background in the aftermath of the Ferguson shooting, Cori Bush and Wesley Bell have taken different paths in their political careers.
Bush’s progressive agenda focuses on reallocating funds from law enforcement to social services, while Bell has implemented sweeping changes as St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney to reduce the jail population and investigate officer-involved shootings.
These divergent approaches reflect the broader ideological spectrum within the Democratic Party.
