Police in New Mexico are looking for a 19-year-old man after charging him with murder in the death of his father, who passed away following a late-August altercation at the son’s home during which the son punched, choked, and kicked him.
Ivan Gonzalez was charged on Oct. 13 with second-degree murder in the death of his father Mario Gonzalez, 44.
Following the incident between Ivan and Mario on Aug. 27, Ivan was arrested on a charge of battery against a household member.

A judge released him on his own recognizance following his arraignment the next day.
Murder was not immediately charged following Mario’s death because investigators had to wait for the full autopsy report to confirm the cause of death.
However, once the autopsy was performed and the medical examiner completed the report, which was received by RPD on Oct. 3, it was learned Mario suffered numerous internal injuries, and the medical examiner ruled Mario’s cause of death to be blunt-force injuries and the manner of death to be homicide.
Based on those findings, RPD reopened the case and charged Ivan with murder.
The incident took place on Aug. 27 in the 1200 block of West 13th Street.
RPD officers were called to the house around 3:40 a.m. While father and son were drinking in a pickup truck outside the residence, they began to argue about various things, according to the findings of the investigation by RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division.
The investigation determined that Ivan became upset and began punching Mario, who then left the truck and began walking toward the house. Investigators learned Ivan went after Mario and choked him, and then, once inside the house, punched him some more and kicked him.

Mario was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to a hospital elsewhere, where he died. In determining Mario died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the beating from his son, the medical examiner also listed existing medical conditions Mario had as significant contributing conditions to his death.
An arrest warrant has been issued. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Ivan Gonzalez (pictured) is asked to call the Roswell Police Department at 575-624-6770.
