Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has opened a new front in his effort to block the rising tide of illegal immigration into his state.

In New Mexico.

Last week, Abbott posted on X, formerly Twitter, a clip from the Fox affiliate in El Paso that showed Texas National Guard troops laying razor wire along the New Mexico state line. They did so at Abbott’s order.

“This is on the border between Texas and NEW Mexico,” Abbott said on X. “Migrants are entering New Mexico illegally then crossing into Texas. We are stopping it.”

The barrier went up near the town of Sunland Park, New Mexico.

The town’s mayor has acknowledged that Abbott was right.

In September, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea told a gathering of state lawmakers, “Actually, from my office I can walk over to El Paso, Texas, or I can walk into Juárez, Mexico. But just as easily as I can walk over there, we have the issue of immigrants crossing over into the United States.”

“We do get people who are trying to access this country through the improper channels, and in that particular sector, it’s one of the highest crossing points.”

The New Mexican also reported that in the border sector that includes Sunland Park, the Border Patrol has encountered roughly 364,000 illegal immigrants between October 2022 and August 2023. That was up 59% from the previous year.

As the Tampa Free Press reported last month, in addition to adding razor wire along the land border between Mexico and Texas, Abbott also has installed a floating “buoy barrier” in the Rio Grande River to deter illegals from crossing into his state.
