The race to become the new House speaker has already drawn two lawmakers backed by conservatives: Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan.

But what about former President Donald Trump?

On Wednesday, Trump, the current front-runner in the Republican presidential primary, posted a photo of himself as the next possible speaker on Truth Social, his social media platform.

The image depicted Trump triumphantly holding the speaker’s gavel while standing at the House floor podium and wearing his trademark red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap.

Trump did not comment on the image on Truth Social.

But as he entered a New York City courtroom for a civil fraud trial, the former president told reporters he would help the GOP in any way he could.

“A lot of people have been calling me about (becoming) speaker. All I can tell you is we’ll do whatever’s best for the country and the Republican Party,” he said.

When asked by a reporter if he would take the job, Trump replied, “A  lot of people have asked me about it.”

But Trump noted that he focused on the 2024 campaign.

“My focus is totally on that,” he added. “If I can help them during the process, I would do it.”

“But we have some great people in the Republican Party that can do a great job,” Trump continued.

Back in January, as the Tampa Free Press reported at the time, Rep. Matt Gaetz nominated Trump during the protracted battle to make Kevin McCarthy the GOP House speaker.

Trump not only declined the job, he endorsed McCarthy for it.

In response, Gaetz said, “Supporting McCarthy is the worst Human Resources decision President Trump has ever made,” he argued. “Sad!”
