Today, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) delivered remarks on the House floor and laid out his vision for the House of Representatives and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA-20) moving forward.

“On this very floor in January, the whole world witnessed a historic contest for House Speaker,” said Gaetz. “I rise today to serve notice. Mr. Speaker, you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role. The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you in to immediate total compliance or remove you, pursuant to a motion to vacate the chair.”

“I know that Washington isn’t a town where people are known for keeping their word. Speaker McCarthy, I’m here to hold you to yours,” said Congressman Gaetz.

Gaetz said on Tuesday September 6, that conservative Americans are increasingly frustrated with the inaction of House Republicans concerning President Joe Biden’s corruption, and that Speaker Kevin McCarthy may pay the price for that.

In an interview with conservative podcaster Todd Starnes, the Fort Walton Beach said many Americans he has met while traveling the country are “disillusioned” with how GOP lawmakers are dealing with Biden’s corruption.

“They think that we have not put up a substantial battle to defeat the worst elements of this Biden administration,” said Gaetz.

The congressman noted that in January he was the architect of a package of conservative proposals designed to “reorient” the new Republican majority to work “in a productive and positive way.”

As the Tampa Free Press reported in January, Gaetz led about 20 conservative Republican holdouts in forcing McCarthy into concessions they wanted before electing him speaker — which occurred after 15 separate votes.

Some of their demands included giving backbenchers more say in the legislative process, expanding the size of the influential Rules Committee that guides the flow of bills, creating a special committee to investigate the “weaponization” of the government against conservatives, advocating for a constitutional amendment for term limits for members of Congress, and installing key conservatives in committee leadership posts.

McCarthy also conceded to a straight-up vote by the House Republicans to step down if he reneged on any of his promises.

“I don’t believe we’ve used those tools as effectively as we should have,” Gaetz told Starnes.

“We’ve got to seize the initiative. That means forcing votes on impeachment. And if Kevin McCarthy stands in our way, he may not have the job long. So let’s hope he works with us, not against us.”

On X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Gaetz added, “What are House Republicans even doing as Democrats WEAPONIZE our government against Americans? Tens of millions of Americans rest their hope on the House of Representatives to stop the terrible things that are going on. However, I offer you this sincere confession: we aren’t putting up the fight you deserve and it sickens me.”

“There is plenty that needs to be done. We in the Majority have the power to do it, but we must stop fiddling around like Nero as Rome burns,” he added.
