The watchdog group that dogs the federal government for its wasteful spending on scientific experiments on animals has recognized a handful of Florida Republicans for their efforts to protect taxpayers.
The White Coat Waste Project (WCW) recently released its seventh annual list of “Congressional Waste Warriors. The WCW’s roster was a bipartisan group of 31 lawmakers in all, including four GOP lawmakers from Florida.
They included Reps. Byron Donalds of Naples, Brian Mast of Palm City, Bill Posey of Rockledge, and Greg Steube of Sarasota.

According to WCW, the accomplishments of those four lawmakers included:
- Donalds helped lead a successful effort to defund Russian animal-testing labs; co-sponsored the Stop Funding Our Adversaries Act to defund all animal labs in China; and called for Dr. Anthony Fauci to testify in front of Congress about his role in funding dangerous gain-of-function animal experiments at the Wuhan, China, lab where some believe the COVID-19 pandemic originated.
- Mast demanded that the NIH explain its colony that breeds puppies to suffer from bleeding disorders; led an ongoing and successful effort to defund dog and cat testing at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has ended all active testing on dogs and cats; helped lead a successful effort to enact a bill defunding the Justice Department “live tissue training” that involved stabbing, shooting, and blowing up live animals; assisted in defunding those Russian labs; wrote a letter urging the Food and Drug Administration to instruct drugmakers on how they can avoid cruel and expensive animal testing red tape for new drugs; joined an effort to convince the National Science Foundation and the NIH to cut off funding to to EcoHealth Alliance, the firm that sent tax dollars to the Wuhan, China, lab for animal experiments that some experts believe caused COVID-19; co-sponsored a measure to block taxpayer funding for animal labs in China, Russia, and other foreign adversary nations; co-sponsored the Preventing Animal Abuse and Waste to ban taxpayer funding for the NIH dog experiments.
- Posey also helped lead the effort to defund Russia’s animal-testing labs; helped pass the bill that defunded the Department of Justice’s “live tissue training”; co-sponsored the AFAR Act to ban taxpayer funding for animal labs in China, Russia, and other foreign adversary nations; co-authored the letter to the FDA to instruct drugmakers on how they can avoid animal testing red tape for new drugs; co-sponsored the bill to block taxpayer funding for those NIH dog experiments; supported the move to convince the National Science Foundation and the NIH to cut off funding to EcoHealth Alliance; cited WCW’s investigations and sent several letters to the NIH demanding details about its dog experiments.
- Steube introduced a measure to ban taxpayer funding for dog experiments by the National Institutes of Health; co-sponsored Violet’s Law, which would allow people to adopt dogs, cats, and other animals used by federal labs when testing ends; co-authored an opinion article for the Daily Caller advocating defunding NIH’s dog experiments; and helped lead the successful effort to defund Russian animal-testing labs.
In his response to being named a Waste Warrior, Steube said in a statement, “Americans do not want their taxpayer dollars used on horrific animal experiments in the name of research. I’ll continue working to end all cruel taxpayer-funded animal experiments.”
