California Democrats who dominate their state’s government may be poised to hand their constituents an $800 billion bill to pay reparations to black state residents for slavery.
Yet a new poll shows few voters in America’s most liberal state want to go along.
According to Newsmax, the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies released a new poll on Sunday that showed Californians oppose reparations by a 2-1 margin.
Perhaps not surprisingly, only blacks support the idea. In all, 76% of black Californians are on board for getting a check.

As the Tampa Free Press has reported, the task force appointed by left-wing California Gov. Gavin Newsom to study the idea has recommended payments that could reach up to $1.2 million for some black residents.
Newsmax noted that the poll revealed only 28% of all voters approve of reparations. Among whites, just 25% do, while among Hispanics and Asians, support for the plan clocked in at 24% and 23%, respectively.
“It has a steep uphill climb, at least from the public’s point of view,” poll Director Mark DiCamillo told the Los Angeles Times.
“The idea of cash reparations is really what’s being strongly opposed. There could be other solutions that could be much more warmly received.”

When asked why they oppose reparations, the two main reasons cited by critics included: “It’s unfair to ask today’s taxpayers to pay for wrongs committed in the past,” with 60% support, and “It’s not fair to single out one group for reparations when other racial and religious groups have been wronged in the past,” which registered 53%.
Interestingly, even most Democrats reject the idea. The poll found that just 43% of Democrats back reparations.
In contrast, just 5% of Republicans favor such a plan, while 90% oppose it.
