The mayor of America’s biggest “sanctuary” city now claims that the massive influx of illegal immigrants in his community is threatening its continued viability.
In comments made Wednesday, according to The Washington Times, Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams lamented the arrival of 10,000 new illegals a month, caring for whom will cost New Yorkers $12 billion over three years. That’s so the city can comply with all of its left-wing local laws that guarantee housing and other government services to all, regardless of their immigration status, the Times noted.
Even at that rate, however, New York City is feeling just a slight fraction of the crunch border towns face routinely. For instance, in April, the website Border Report noted that Brownsville, Texas, was overrun by 5,000 illegals in a week — a situation that has gone on for years under President Joe Biden.

“I don’t see an ending to this,” Adams told an audience at a community meeting, the Times reported. “This issue will destroy New York City.”
“It’s going to come to your neighborhoods. All of us are going to be impacted by this,” he continued. “The city we knew, we’re about to lose.”
Adams also took a swipe at the Biden administration for “what they’re trying to do to us” by failing to control the border or not stepping up federal resources to help cover the costs.
Adams is among a growing chorus of liberal Democrats who are complaining about Biden’s unwillingness to police the border and inability to provide them any relief.
Democratic Govs. Kathy Hochul of New York, Phil Murphy of New Jersey and Maura Healey of Massachusetts have all complained about Biden’s loss of control of border policy.
A month ago, Healey, for example, griped to the Biden administration about the “federal crisis of inaction that is many years in the making,” but which has radically escalated under Biden.

The shift for Adams is profound.
As a candidate in October 2021, Adams proclaimed on X (formerly Twitter), “We should protect our immigrants. Period. Yes, New York City will remain a sanctuary under an Adams administration.”
Yet as the Tampa Free Press reported in May, Adams was trying to end NYC’s sanctuary status, which was first adopted in 2014, because “no one thought they would be dealing with a humanitarian crisis of this proportion.”
