TAMPA, Fla. – Bucs star wide receiver Mike Evans has drawn a line in the sand over contract extension negotiations with the Bucs, but no matter how that turns out,

Evans says he’s playing for Tampa Bay this season.

“I’m looking forward to having a great season this year,” Evans said after Thursday’s practice. “Whatever happens, happens. I’ll be alright.”

The 30 year old four-time Pro Bowler is playing on a contract that expires March 13, so there’s two options the Bucs have. Sign him to a new deal or give him the franchise tag.

Evans’ agent, Deryk Gilmore has set a deadline for this Saturday to get a new deal done with the Bucs or else there will be no negotiating going forward. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles says it won’t affect the team or the game plan for Sunday.

“It doesn’t change anything,” Bowles said. “Mike is in great shape. He is ready to go for the season. He is excited about it. There is a business side of football as we all know. That takes care of itself, but there will be no distractions.”

Evans is the only player in league history to have garnered nine straight 1,000 yard seasons in his first nine years in the NFL. The Galveston Texans native wants to be paid like one of the best wide receivers in the league.

“I just set the deadline,” Evans said. “I’m sure you all read the statement. Obviously we’ve been working for over a year now with them trying to get something done”.

Bucs other star wideout Chris Godwin understands business is business and says Evans is the epitome of a pro that’s locked in once he gets on the field.

“I think as professionals, whenever you’re here, you go out and you play,” Godwin said. “I don’t know if there is a better example of that than Mike. Godwin is in Year 2 of a three year deal worth $60 million.

Evans says he’s not going to talk about this contract situation any more and is going to focus on helping the Bucs win. He feels he’s being fair.

“Any player in my position would want to be solidified and secure”, Evans said. “But if a deal’s done or not, either way I’m looking forward to having a great season this year.”
