House Judiciary Committee Republicans are probing whether Atlanta’s anti-Trump district attorney coordinated her efforts with federal prosecutors going after the former president.
On Thursday, former President Donald Trump was booked in Fulton County, Georgia, on charges he conspired to overturn the 2020 election. Trump was released shortly after his arrest and is expected to appear next month to enter a plea.
Yet also on Thursday, according to The Washington Times, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan issued a letter to District Attorney Fani Willis seeking information as to whether she worked with the Justice Department and other Biden administration officials in bringing the indictment of Trump.
GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida is also a member of the Judiciary Committee.
In the letter, Jordan wrote, “The circumstances surrounding your actions raise serious concerns about whether they are politically motivated.”

As proof, according to Jordan’s office website, the Republicans’ letter noted that Willis launched a new campaign fundraising site “that highlighted [her] investigation into President Trump” several days before the indictment became public.
The letter also referenced the media tour by Emily Kohrs, forewoman of the special grand jury convened by Willis, who publicly bragged to left-wing media outlets “about her excitement at the prospect of subpoenaing President Trump and getting to swear him in.”
The letter to Willis also noted that Fulton County’s court clerk released the list of charges against Trump hours before the grand jury formally voted to charge him.
The Times also reported that a Fulton County court blocked Willis from going after Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in her probe because she actively supported and held fundraising events for Jones’ Democratic opponent.
According to the Times, Jordan added in the letter, “There are questions about whether and how your office coordinated with DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith during the course of this investigation, and Congress has an interest in any such activity that involves federal law enforcement agencies and officials that fall under its oversight.”

“News outlets have reported that your office and Mr. Smith ‘interviewed many of the same witnesses and reviewed much of the same evidence’ in reaching your decision to indict President Trump.”
Jordan further notes that Willis opened the investigation into trump in January 2021 and called it a “high priority” for her office, yet she waited more than 30 months, until the GOP presidential primary was ongoing, the secure the indictment.
“You did not bring charges until two-and-a-half years later, at a time when the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is in full swing. Moreover, you have requested that the trial in this matter begin on March 4, 2024, the day before Super Tuesday and eight days before the Georgia presidential primary,” Jordan noted.
“It is therefore unsurprising many have speculated that this indictment and prosecution are designed to interfere with the 2024 presidential election.”
The Times noted that Willis refused to answer a reporter’s question about whether she worked with Smith in indicting Trump.
