The Colorado man charged with killing 10 people at a Boulder supermarket in 2021, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, has been deemed competent to proceed toward a trial, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors announced that experts at the state mental hospital have determined that Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is now competent to proceed with his trial. This means that he is considered able to understand the court proceedings and can assist in his own defense.

Earlier this year, defense lawyers confirmed that Alissa has schizophrenia, a mental disorder that affects a person’s ability to understand reality. Despite this mental health condition, the experts have now concluded that he is able to participate in the court case.

Being deemed mentally competent doesn’t mean that Alissa has been cured of his mental health condition. Instead, it indicates that he is capable of understanding the proceedings and can communicate with his lawyers to assist in his defense.

Alissa faces charges related to the March 22, 2021, shooting at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. The attack resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including a Boulder police officer, Officer Eric Talley.

While the experts’ conclusion has been announced, a judge still needs to accept their assessment in order for the criminal proceedings against Alissa to resume. This step is important to officially move forward with the trial process.

The shooting at the King Soopers supermarket shocked the community and the state, given Colorado’s history of mass shootings. The attack claimed the lives of 10 individuals and resulted in significant public attention.

The King Soopers store, where the shooting took place, was remodeled and reopened last year. About half of the employees who were there during the shooting chose to return to work after the reopening, according to the AP.
