DETROIT, Mich. – Former suburban Detroit mayor Rick Sollars, who faced corruption allegations and lost his reelection bid, has pleaded guilty to a bribery scheme involving foreclosed homes and a favored contractor.
The allegations included receiving cash and home renovations valued at over $40,000 in exchange for recommending tax-foreclosed properties to Shady Awad in Taylor, Michigan.
“Sollars, as the mayor of the city of Taylor, betrayed the trust of the citizens and the voters who supported him,” U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison said.

Sollars was also accused of using campaign funds for personal purposes. He lost his reelection campaign in 2021 while under indictment, and Shady Awad had also pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the same year.
Both prosecutors and Sollars’ defense team have agreed to recommend a six-year prison sentence to the judge for his involvement in the bribery scheme.
Sollars’ attorney declined to comment after his guilty plea.
