Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL-01) introduced legislation to prohibit federal funding for the Special Counsel’s Office of John “Jack” L. Smith.
Gaetz’s bill would block federal funds authorized or appropriated by federal law or any funds in any trust fund of the federal government from being used for Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office and investigation.
On July 18th, 2023, President Donald J. Trump released a statement indicating he is the target of the investigation by Special Counsel Smith related to January 6th.
“This indicates Special Counsel Smith’s office has engaged in election interference by using his investigation to go after President Trump, who public polling has indicated is the leading contender in the 2024 Republican primary for president. In addition, his office has lacked transparency, failing to answer correspondence from my office to produce specific documents related to his staff and the investigation,” said Gaetz.

“The government is being weaponized to go after President Donald J. Trump. The House of Representatives must defund Jack Smith’s office and end the witch hunt,” said Gaetz Wednesday. “The power of the purse is not some intermittent thing that we wield every fiscal cycle. It’s something that we have to wield day in and day out to achieve victory for our people and to stop this. I’m under no illusion that the Democrats will bring such legislation up in the Senate, but the American people deserve to know where members of Congress stand.”
Congressional Republicans are standing with former President Donald Trump following Tuesday’s announcement of a third possible indictment.
Former President Donald Trump has been ordered to report to a federal Grand Jury, according to a statement from Trump on Tuesday. Trump was notified by letter on Sunday night.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump said on Truth Social.

House Republicans immediately rallied around the former President.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said, “President Trump just increased his lead in the polls. So what does the Biden Administration do next? Weaponize government to go after President Biden’s number one opponent. This is not equal justice. It’s wrong, and the American public is tired of it.”
“This shameful witch hunt against President Trump by Joe Biden’s corrupt Department of Justice is just the latest chilling chapter in the Far Left’s unAmerican weaponization of the justice system against their leading political opponent,” said Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene: “Jack Smith has weaponized the federal government against President Trump in a complete lie about January 6 to cover up the crimes of Joe & Hunter Biden and their entire criminal family. The Democrats want to arrest every one of their political opponents. It’s hard to recognize our country anymore.”
Congressman Jim Jordan deposed Special Counsel Jack Smith in 2014 due to Smith’s role in trying to prosecute conservative nonprofits targeted in the Lois Lerner IRS scandal.

“You know how political this is when they selected Jack Smith as the special counsel…We deposed him on May 29, 2014, because he was looking to prosecute people targeted by Obama’s IRS,” Rep. Jordan said in an interview.
Jack Smith’s wife donated $2,000 to support Joe Biden’s presidential campaign and has also donated to support socialist Rashida Tlaib. She also produced a glowing documentary about Michelle Obama for Netflix.
