Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed 21 bills on Wednesday, including a measure aimed at requiring lactation spaces in county courthouses.
The bill dealing with lactation spaces (SB 144) requires that county courthouses in Florida provide at least one dedicated area “for members of the public to express breast milk or breastfeed in private.”
The nursing areas would have to be outside the confines of a restroom and meet certain requirements, such as being clean and sanitary and shielded from public view.

However, the requirement would not apply to courthouses that are deemed to need new construction to put in a lactation space and don’t contain such a space for employees that can be used by the public and lack a space that could be repurposed for such use.
Also exempt from the requirement are courthouses that would need new construction and don’t have a space that “could be made private at a reasonable cost using portable materials, contingent upon private funding being made available for those costs.”
DeSantis on Wednesday also signed a measure that puts new requirements on school districts related to reporting how African-American instruction is taught.

Under the bill (HB 551), districts must provide the state education commissioner an “implementation plan” detailing how the instruction is delivered at each grade level and a description of instructional materials used.
Both of the new laws are set to take effect in July.
