POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Polk County Sheriff Judd briefed the media on a double-fatal crash on SR 60 in Mulberry.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash happened at around 5:41 a.m. and involved two vehicles.

“We had a Bartow High School senior, who was driving eastbound toward Bartow High School in her red pickup truck,” said Judd. “She was apparently, from all indications of the early stage of the investigation, obeying the law.”

Judd said a silver Expedition was heading westbound turned to head south, and the Bartow teen struck the expedition.

“There were seven people in the expedition. Four of them were ejected. It was obvious they weren’t wearing seat belts. Two of them landed on the road. Two of them landed in the wood line. They were significantly injured,” said Judd.

Judd said the 18-year-old Bartow High School senior was significantly injured and flown to Tampa General.

According to Judd, five people were transported by ground ambulance to Lakeland Regional, where they’re being treated, and one person died on the scene.

“We have now the second fatality that’s died in Lakeland Regional. So we’ve got two deceased, and the others are in very various conditions from stable to critical. It is a possibility that a third may die as a result of their injuries. That one is an emergency surgery right now. So this was a horrible day,” said Judd.
