Longtime TV personality Jerry Springer, who pioneered the high-energy, often-profane genre of confrontational daytime television, died Thursday after a bout with cancer, his representatives said.
Springer was 79.

From 2007 to 2008, Springer hosted America’s Got Talent, and from September 2019 until 2022, Springer hosted the courtroom show Judge Jerry.
Springer was born in London, England, to a Jewish family. He moved to the United States with his family when he was five years old. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in political science and from Northwestern University School of Law with a law degree. After law school, Springer worked as a lawyer and a politician. He served as the Mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978.
