The Senate on Tuesday passed a measure aimed at helping transition military members and their dependents into higher education.
The bill (SB 732) would establish the “Collegiate Purple Star Campuses” program. Under the program, participating colleges, universities and career centers would be required to do things such as maintain a “student-led transition program that assists military students in transitioning” into the schools.
They also would have to offer professional development to staff members on issues related to students with military backgrounds, designate a staff member as a “military liaison” and maintain a web page to inform the students and their families about resources.

The program would require the State Board of Education and the state university system’s Board of Governors to adopt rules to carry out the program.
An identical bill (HB 845) is poised for consideration by the full House.
