Comedian Chris Rock joked earlier this week that arresting Donald Trump for allegedly paying off a stripper would backfire on Democrats, and only make him more popular with voters.

A new poll seems to prove Rock right.

According to a Monmouth University poll, Trump now holds a 14-point lead over his closest rival for the Republican nomination, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The former president led DeSantis 41-27 among GOP voters. The same poll had them tied a month ago.

Monmouth conducted the poll from Thursday through Monday.

Last Saturday, Trump said on social media that he would be arrested on Tuesday by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a left-wing prosecutor backed by radical billionaire George Soros.

As The Free Press reported recently, Bragg is close to indicting Trump for paying “hush money” to stripper Stormy Daniels in 2016. Trump’s critics contend he paid off Daniels to keep her quiet about an affair so as to not hurt his first presidential campaign.

Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, counters that the former president was following the legal advice of his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who was later convicted on federal charges and sentenced to prison. Tacopina said there was no crime because Trump paid money to Cohen as legal fees.

Meanwhile, the Monmouth poll also revealed that Trump has made “substantial gains” on DeSantis in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up.

The latest poll had Trump leading DeSantis 47-46. That’s a major shift from the February survey, when the Florida governor outpaced Trump 53% to 40%.
