A Washington Post columnist argues that Major League Baseball should abandon Florida, the home of pro baseball’s annual spring training season for over a century, because of Gov. Ron DeSantis.

In a column on Monday, Kevin B. Blackistone said MLB can no longer ignore the Republican governor’s “culture war.”

Accordingly, baseball must punish Florida, which has somehow crept back to the days of 1947 when Jackie Robinson was trying to break into the all-white ranks of major league baseball.

Why? Because DeSantis blocked the teaching of the left-wing Critical Race Theory in public schools.

Blackistone cited the governor’s “hostile approach to inclusiveness” and his “attack on diversity,” which stemmed from DeSantis’s opposition to a new Advanced Placement curriculum in African American studies.

Blackistone objects that DeSantis labeled the course “indoctrination,” and in doing so “dismissed its educational value and threatened to replace the nonprofit College Board that approved it.”

As The Free Press has reported, the Florida Department of Education rejected the AP course in January and refused to use it unless changes were made.

A bevy of critics labeled DeSantis a racist and claimed he was trying to end the teaching of slavery and other components of black history — even though Florida state law mandates the teaching of those subjects, as well as recognizing the achievements of black Americans.

What DeSantis and the DOE sent packing was a course steeped in “Black Queer Theory,” and other subjects such as the Black Lives Matter movement, “Black feminist literary thought,” “intersectionality and activism” and “the reparations movement.”

The College Board ultimately revised the course to drop those parts, although it denied the decision had anything to do with DeSantis or his threat, as Blackistone correctly pointed out, to dump the College Board’s materials and seek an alternative provider.

As PJ Media columnist Robert Spencer pointed out on Tuesday, Blackistone “does not offer a single example of how the evil reign of this un-woke governor would disadvantage black players, or any other players, training in Florida. He does not, of course, because he cannot.”

Blackistone added, “says nothing about how that course is a long exercise in race-hate propaganda that has virtually no basis in actual historical or present-day realities.”
