After a stellar performance by Florida Governor DeSantis on Tuesday, things seem to be heating up between him and Trump.
On Tuesday, DeSantis easily won a second term Tuesday and further cemented his conservative imprint on the state, amid growing speculation that he will run for the White House in two years.
DeSantis earned 4.6 million votes to challenger Charlie Crist’s 3.1 million.
On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump said on Truth Social, “Now that the Election in Florida is over, and everything went quite well, shouldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year, 5.7 Million to 4.6 Million? Just asking?”
In the 2020 election, Trump received 5,668,731 votes to Biden’s 5,297,045.
On Tuesday, Trump sent a warning shot to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, don’t run for the presidency in 2024.
Interviewing with Fox News Digital, Trump was asked if the pair were in some kind of “tiff,” Trump replied, “There’s not a tiff with me, and I’m way up in the polls,” Trump said. “No, there’s not.”
“I don’t know if he is running. I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly. I really believe he could hurt himself badly,” Trump said. “I think he would be making a mistake, I think the base would not like it — I don’t think it would be good for the party,” Trump said.
“Any of that stuff is not good — you have other people that possibly will run, I guess,” Trump added. “I don’t know if he runs. If he runs, he runs.”
But then a warning shot was fired.
“I would tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering,” Trump said of DeSantis. “I know more about him than anybody – other than, perhaps, his wife.”
At a rally in Pennsylvania last weekend, Trump referred to DeSantis as “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
“We’re winning big in the Republican Party for the nomination like nobody’s ever seen before,” Trump told a crowd in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night before going down the list of other Republicans who could potentially challenge him in 2024.
“There it is, Trump at 71%, Ron DeSanctimonious at 10%,” Trump told the crowd while reading polling numbers of multiple Republicans.
But Trump apparently sought to rebound from his swipe of DeSantis.
Campaigning on Sunday in Miami with GOP Sen. Marco Rubio, Trump glossed over his poke at DeSantis just 24 hours earlier, “You’re going to reelect Ron DeSantis as your governor of the state.”
