SANFORD, Fla. – Page Jackson Cemetery has a tremendous amount of history. It is 150 years old, originally known as the “Colored Cemetery” and wasn’t renamed until the 1980s after Mr. Jackson who donated the land for the cemetery.
He was a celery farmer and wanted to use the land for those who could not afford a normal burial, so they were allowed to bury their own. Over 3000 are believed to be buried here, but it is said only 700+ are on record. Some were slaves, while others were well-known in the community.
Because some grave areas are unmarked, and there is no set pattern as to where the loved ones are buried, you have to watch your step as you may fall through a sunken grave.
One of the hidden areas in the woods contains many grave markers, tombstones, and above-ground burials, some are just handmade crosses.

The spirits linger in this area and are peaceful and friendly. Their presence is felt regularly.
This area also is popular for Santeria, an African diasporic religion originally developed in Cuba. This faith is based on Yoruba beliefs and is separate from Voodoo and Witchcraft. Santeria often uses a kettle and sacrifices a chicken.
The self-claimed caretaker of the property has found dismembered chickens before in the woods. The kettle is usually well-covered with palm leaves. Stories have been told of rattlesnakes in the sunken graves, but these are not true as he has never seen one in all his many years of living close by.
