BROOKSVILLE, FL. – Early morning Wednesday, Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services (HCFES) drove up to a residential fire at 9100 block of Highpoint Blvd while returning from a public assist. HCFES arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke and fire through the roof of the rear of the manufactured home.
Both occupants were standing outside.
The fire was completely under control at 4:15 a.m. The two occupants sustained smoke inhalation trying to rescue their pets from the home. The occupants were transported to Bayonet Point Medical Center for evaluation. Despite the quick response and extinguishment, the residence sustained damages exceeded $80,000.
The origin of the fire appears to be the rear of the structure, but the cause is currently under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshall’s Office.
HCFES responded with 4 fire engines, 4 ALS medic units, 1 Air Truck, Fire Corps, and 2 Battalion Chiefs for a total of 22 personnel.
HCFES would like to remind the community that smoke in modern construction is extremely toxic. Reentry into the structure without proper breathing equipment can result in death from just a few breaths.
