U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz has been among the fiercest critics of the Pentagon’s lurch into wokeness under President Joe Biden.
The Defense Department’s recent reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court gutting the court’s longstanding Roe v. Wade ruling on abortion provided Gaetz another opportunity.
As Military.com reported on Saturday, the U.S. Air Force could be rethinking a relocation of the Space Force command from Colorado to Alabama.
The Space Training and Readiness Command, or STARCOMM, is mulling over a few choices: staying in Colorado or shifting left, both geographically and politically, to California. Or, alternatively, the Air Force could make a sharp move to the right, again geographically and politically, heading to Alabama or possibly Patrick Air Force base on Florida’s Atlantic coast.
An Air Force spokeswoman told Military.com that Air Force leaders “are working closely with the Office of the Secretary of Defense to review the impact on the force of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Dobbs,” referring to the controversial Supreme Court case out of Mississippi.

The website also noted that Colorado lawmakers believe a relocation to Alabama “will hurt troops’ quality of life, as well as harm the military’s retention efforts.”
As The Press reported in April, Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis enacted a law this spring that definitively said a “fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent or derivative rights under the laws of this state.”
The law also short-changed women, saying that now “a pregnant individual has a fundamental right to continue a pregnancy and give birth or to have an abortion and to make decisions about how to exercise that right.”
On Monday, Gaetz responded to the Military.com piece with a terse tweet: “We must stop wokeism from negatively impacting readiness like this.”
The Fort Walton Beach Republican had ripped the Pentagon for “wokeism” before. In April, he jousted with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin over having a socialist professor brief troops and for the Pentagon implementing “pronoun training.”
That clash came after the Pentagon has promoted a recruiting ad that featured a female soldier talking about her mother’s lesbian relationship and that she learned about freedo by marching in gay pride parades, and had openly said it was looking to root out “white supremacists,” which many conservatives believed was code for supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Gaetz said in an interview in June that if Republicans recapture Congress in November, they must “go on offense to de-wokeify the military.”
