U.S. Rep. Greg Steube argues that Democrats are practicing “lookism” in their latest push to impose gun control.
In an email to constituents on Sunday, the Sarasota Republican said House Democrats’ advocacy for a renewed “assault weapons ban” is not an attempt “to ban ‘weapons of war’ like the one I was issued in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Those weapons of war are already unavailable for purchase in America.”
Instead, Steube added, “Democrats are discriminating in their legislation against some of the most popular weapons in the U.S. simply because they don’t like the way they look.”
As The Free Press reported on Saturday, the Democrats’ bill specifically identifies at least 195 individual firearms as “semiautomatic assault weapons” and would make it illegal to “import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess” any of them.

The measure says that is necessary as its purpose is “to regulate assault weapons” and “to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited.”
Steube struck a nerve among Democrats last week in his comments on the legislation.
During debate on the bill, Steube offered some his hist time to Democrats, saying, “I would yield to a member on the Democratic side who served in a combat-area designated zone in deployment of our country.”
“Anybody on the Democratic side?” he added. He found no takers, but plenty of anger.
One Democrat asked, “What is the purpose of the question?” He then tried to complain that he was “offended” by Steube’s suggestion that, because the Democrats have not served in war, “we don’t care about the lives of our constituents.”
Another angrily asserted, “I’ve seen my constituents die in battle.”
But that was not the point, Steube retorted.
Steube, as an Army veteran, said he wanted to ask Democrats questions about military firearms so they could explain what they mean by “weapons of war.” The congressman noted that the M-4 rifle he was issued by the Army in 2006 during Iraqi Freedom was capable of automatic – or machine gun – firing.
“Those firearms are not allowed for purchase in the United States today,” he said. “And that is not what the Democrats are attempting to ban because that’s already banned.”
Steube added in his email Sunday, “Every American is entitled to defend themselves and I remain committed to protecting this right.”
