Florida Man Crashes His Car Into A Home Then Reports It Stolen

A Florida man who reported his car stolen from his driveway this past weekend has been arrested after deputies found his car crashed into a nearby house – and learned he was the driver who crashed it.

According to deputies, Amador Rodriguez, 20, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and providing false information to law enforcement after admitting to deputies that his initial story was a lie.

A deputy responded to Rodriguez’s home on Normandy Boulevard around 2 a.m. Sunday to take his report of a stolen vehicle.

Rodriguez told the deputy he parked his blue Honda Civic in his driveway around 9 p.m. Saturday and left it unlocked with his keys and wallet inside. Deputies reported the car as stolen and began investigating the theft, searching through the license plate reader database to find several hits, indicating the car had traveled into Seminole County on Saturday evening and back to Volusia County early Sunday.

Later Sunday morning, though, deputies responded to the scene of a hit-and-run crash discovered a few blocks away, at 1009 E. Normandy Blvd.

Deputies say that’s where Rodriguez’s blue Honda Civic was found partially wedged inside the back of the house, causing extensive damage. Fortunately, there was no one at home at the time of the crash.

Further interviews with Rodriguez led to his admission that he made up the story about his car being stolen, and instead had crashed it himself. He returned home on foot without reporting the crash or attempting to check on anyone potentially injured inside.

Rodriguez had minor injuries that appeared to be caused by the airbag deployment in the crash.

He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he was released after posting $500 bond for leaving the scene and $1,000 bond for the false report.
