A Florida man behind bars will be staying a bit longer after investigators intercepted incoming birthday cards laced with drugs.

Specifically, Suboxone strips through letters addressed to him from outside the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Facility.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Special Investigations Unit (SIU) conducted an investigation regarding two inmates at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility trying to arrange an illegal narcotics delivery.

Deputies determined 26-year-old Eric Marcotte was having mail sent to him, birthday cards with Suboxone strips glued inside them.

Detectives first intercepted a piece of mail addressed to Marcotte on April 27th. Detectives found a birthday card with a peeling corner. As they inspected the card, they discovered a silver strip of tape located in between the card paper containing two strips of Suboxone.

Detectives made a controlled delivery of the “birthday cards” and then arrested him.“An inmate at the Green Roof Inn just extended his stay,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Inmates will try anything when it comes to getting drugs. Well, happy birthday to Eric but it’s not the surprise you were hoping for.”

Marcotte was charged with the Introduction of Contraband into a Correctional Facility.

Marcotte was arrested in February on two felony charges for Grand Theft and Carjacking. Deputies say he’s being held without bond.

He’s previously been charged in Florida with Vehicle Burglary, Trespassing, Petit Theft, Contempt of Court, Loitering, Grand Theft, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Resist Office without Violence, Possession of Marijuana, Battery on Law Enforcement, Possession of Alcohol by Person Under 21, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Robbery, Battery – Domestic Violence and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Marcotte was also charged in Ohio with Robbery, Theft, and Failure to Comply with Order of a Police Officer.
