TAMPA, FL. – Senate Republican leaders Monday endorsed former state Rep. Shawn Harrison to try to unseat Sen. Janet Cruz, D-Tampa, in a redrawn Hillsborough County district.
Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, Sen. Kathleen Passidomo, a Naples Republican who will become Senate president in November, and Sen. Ben Albritton, a Wauchula Republican who is slated to become Senate president in 2024, backed Harrison in Senate District 14.
The race likely will be one of the highest-profile legislative elections this year. Harrison, R-Tampa, was elected to the House in 2010 but lost the seat in 2012 after his district was redrawn.
He won back the seat in 2014 but lost a re-election bid in 2018. Cruz, a former House member, was elected in 2018 in Senate District 18.
But she is running this year in the redrawn District 14 after the once-a-decade reapportionment process.
